The hungry gap is finally over. After a stretch of late winter where the fruit and veg counter ran on stored apples and root veg, the field next door is starting to do its work again.
On the fruit & veg counter this week
- Asparagus — Tarleton, the proper stuff. Snap it, don’t cut it.
- New potatoes — first lift from Lathom. Steam them whole.
- Strawberries — early ones from Charlock Hall, in this Friday.
- Spring greens & purple sprouting broccoli — the field next door.
- Wild garlic — Roger pulls a bag every morning while the dog goes around the bottom field.
On the butchers’ counter
Lamb is the headline. The flock has been out on grass since late March and you can taste the difference — sweeter, less waxy fat, much better colour. We’ve got shoulders, legs, and racks, and Steve will French-trim a rack for you while you wait.
What we’ve been making
A new pork pie recipe — slightly less peppery, more sage. We’ll test it on Saturday’s customers and see what they think. Don’t be shy about telling us if it’s worse than the old one.
